Cast of Characters: Irregular Fantasy! part 5

A continuation of this series; we'll be introducing all of the currently-planned characters in TAPAS's upcoming series Irregular Fantasy!, based on David Morgan-Mar's webcomic Irregular Webcomic! In short, it's a typical RPG adventure set in a typical fantasy world, taking the silly atmosphere of the comic and making it our own.

Spoiler warning: While this presentation will try to avoid any details about backgrounds, plotlines, or relationships in order to focus entirely on the characters and not give away the story, some details that might be considered spoilers will inevitably leak through now and then.

We now move beyond characters you can expect to meet in the pilot. This page will display just some of the characters that the Irregulars will meet on their trip up the Elusian River, which will take sort of a town-of-the-week format as they make their way to the Orcrift Mountains. That's my model for Season 1, if I dare to dream we get that far.

These character concepts were drawn by me and therefore aren't very good. All the same, the full-color versions prove that these are definitely some very striking designs! I think I'm onto something, we just need someone with a steady hand to draw them properly. Linework and color by Naty Jenfjord.

Cast of Characters: The Choices part 5

A continuation of this series! We'll be introducing all of the currently-planned characters in TAPAS's upcoming series Keys & Kingdoms: The Choices.

The Keys & Kingdoms universe is an intended gaming setting that combines the feel of typical Dungeons & Dragons-style high fantasy with that of a Disney fairytale musical!

Spoiler warning: While this presentation will try to avoid any details about backgrounds, plotlines, or relationships in order to focus entirely on the characters and not give away the story, some details that might be considered spoilers will inevitably leak through now and then.

This chapter depicts characters encountered in the black forests of the kingdom of Underheim, and later on, further across the world in the high-tech metropolises of the kingdom of Onnecco.

These character concepts were drawn by me and therefore aren't very good. All the same, the full-color versions prove that these are definitely some very striking designs! I think I'm onto something, we just need someone with a steady hand to draw them properly. Linework and color by McKenzie Eby.

Cast of Characters: Irregular Fantasy! part 4

This entry is concerned with the characters of the iconic Death Department, and miscellaneous other characters who will be encountered in the show's pilot episode.

These characters were drawn by me and therefore aren't very good. Linework and color by Naty Jenfjord. They definitely look better in color than they did when I sketched them. Though, almost not, because it enhanced the shoddiness of my linework. Assignment understood, I guess, lol. Also I really didn't know how to draw skulls at this point in time. I got better.

Cast of Characters: Irregular Fantasy! part 3

On this page, we present characters from the pilot belonging to the main antagonistic organization of the story -- the cult of Cthulhu.

Most of these character concepts were drawn by me and therefore aren't very good. They'll get better -- in the future, they'll be my designs but not my art style, if ya know the distinction. Linework and color by Naty Jenfjord.

Cast of Characters: The Choices part 4

A continuation of this series! We'll be introducing all of the currently-planned characters in TAPAS's upcoming series Keys & Kingdoms: The Choices.

Today's chapter shows off just some of the characters encountered at a certain small village -- a place to show off the race of people known simply as "natives", the first people of the Keys & Kingdoms world, whose deal you'll no doubt figure out in short order.

These character concepts were drawn by me and therefore aren't very good. Linework and color by McKenzie Eby. They definitely look better in color than they did when I sketched them. Though it enhances the shoddiness of my linework. Assignment understood I guess, lol.

Cast of Characters: Irregular Fantasy! part 1

Starting up a second series of blog posts, introducing the characters from TAPAS's upcoming series Irregular Fantasy!, based on David Morgan-Mar's webcomic Irregular Webcomic!

In short, it's a typical RPG adventure set in a typical fantasy world, taking the silly atmosphere of the comic and making it our own. This work of not-quite-animation has a teaser, viewable here, and a few character shorts and a two-part pilot, all of this together comprising what we call the "prologue", are in production.

Spoiler warning: While this presentation will try to avoid any details about backgrounds, plotlines, or relationships in order to focus entirely on the characters and not give away the story, some details that might be considered spoilers will inevitably leak through now and then.

Let's start with the main characters: the adventuring party who will come to call themselves "the Irregulars", a name invented for our adaptation as the crew has none in the original comic.

Cast of Characters: The Choices part 1

Starting up a series of blog posts where I introduce all the characters from TAPAS's upcoming series Keys & Kingdoms: The Choices.

The Keys & Kingdoms universe is an intended gaming setting that combines the feel of typical Dungeons & Dragons-style high fantasy with those of a Disney fairytale musical!

As in any typical RPG adventure, The Choices is about a group of random adventurers from vastly different walks of life, banding together on a whim and ending up in serious conflict with a dangerous, potentially world-ending adversary. This work of not-quite-animation has a teaser in progress!

Spoiler warning: While this presentation will try to avoid any details about backgrounds, plotlines, or relationships in order to focus entirely on the characters and not give away the story, some details that might be considered spoilers will inevitably leak through now and then.

Let's start with the main characters: the adventuring party we call "the Choices", and their main nemesis.

This official character art is in the process of being upgraded as the production goes on, but for now I wanted to display the slightly-outdated versions for posterity!

Released from hospital

Well, this wasn't how I intended to return to the blog. I have loads of ideas for enough entries to keep it alive for a while. But I guess this is the way I brush the dust off of it. People ought to know.

In a week in which I was, seemingly, only mildly frustrated at how my current creative pursuit was going a lot slower than I thought it would, having taken all week just to draw up a plan, I went to see the QCT production of Rent. Spectacular show, I'd never seen it in any form before, and it was really, really great, but, I found it triggered me. I can't say I've ever been right and properly traumatically triggered before... I didn't want to live anymore. I didn't want to miss the second half of the show either... but I sent my friend Mason, who was in the show, a text that I was in crisis. He drove me to the hospital and I remained in the ward for six days... which is four days longer than I feel was strictly necessary, I was ready to get back to my life by day two, but, maybe too ready... I was jittery... the doctor and therapist wanted me to chill out first.

Here I am, freshly released. I'd say I was pretty chill. Was dying for a shave, which I've had, felt good. Why do I always have that one eye squintier than the other in photos? And how is it that my hair always looks so much better mirrored than in reality? You'd think that wouldn't matter.

So, here's the thing about Rent - it came at me from both sides. You might say "run your own race", or "comparison is the thief of joy" - I have difficulty keeping a healthy relationship with that concept.

I saw people who were better than me. Rent is a great work of art in itself, and even this production in particular, I'm looking at it and thinking, "I will never be on that level of art."

And I saw people who were worse off. These characters deal with eviction and possible homelessness in midwinter, prejudice, most of them have AIDS in an era when that meant certain death... they have problems. And I think to myself, "I don't have any problems. I struggle just because I'm bad at everything. It's my fault, and I don't deserve to be depressed."

It was too much to handle. Spectacular show, though, I wouldn't have wished to miss it.

You ever seen Bluey? I've watched the whole series (as it stands thus far, two-thirds of the way through Season 3) three times over on Disney+. Delightful show. I'd like to point you to episode 47 of Season 2, "Baby Race". It deals in the themes that upset me, and helped me with them in moments when I was more at rest. I'm also given to understand that it makes moms cry. Check it out, and if you liked it, hit me up for more episode recommendations, I've got loads of them, 'cause, there's a lot of episodes and... while they're all good for adults, all head and shoulders above any other preschool content of the last 40 years... some stand out more in that department and I have a list of favorites.
